Identifying Automated Labeling Applications

Determining where automated labeling will occur is an important first step in defining your application. The intended use of data printed on labels will determine where labels are applied. The following scenarios define some of the applications associated with the SMT assembly process.

WIP Tracking - When the label will provide real-time feedback about the production process (WIP tracking), it is most useful to apply the label early in the assembly process. Labeling will typically occur prior to assembly, in a kitting or receiving area, or within the assembly line after a loader or screen printer. Applying labels early in the assembly process provides ample opportunity for data to be scanned as the product moves through assembly.
Product Identification - When the label will be used to identify a product, manufacturer or customer, or for warranty or service reasons, it can be applied at any point during the assembly process. It may even occur outside of assembly altogether and be accomplished in a shipping or packaging area..
Multiple Labeling Locations - When a manufacturer produces the same product for several customers, or when products require multiple labels, labels may be applied at more than one location during assembly. Such applications affix a single label to each assembly or product in either a standalone or inline process. The label identifies that the lot or work order. The label's information is scanned upon reaching the second labeling location. Data read during scanning causes the labeling system to automatically choose label content for that specific product, lot or work order.
Unique Scenarios - Automated labeling may also serve unique applications such as the labeling of a faceplate that subsequently is hand-assembled onto the product. This specific application would require a carrier to transport the parts through the labeling system.
Rework Labeling - the DataPlace Model VLM supports this application. Using the same software interface as other DataPlace systems, the DataPlace VLM supports manual re-labeling while maintaining serialization and consistency with the original label, work order, serialization scheme, etc.
